The most important part of the two sketch-books at Berlin consists of drawings executed by Marten van Heemskerck between 1532 and 1535 in Rome. His magnificent studies in pen and chalk form the most important visual source for our knowledge of the antique sculptures and monuments and of the antique collections in the first half of the 16th century in Rome. The drawings of Heemskerck and the other leaves in the sketch-books, which are ascribed to several anonymous masters, have been provided with an extensive commentary by HüŸlsen and Egger.

This edition has been provided with an Introduction in English by M.H.L. Netto-Bol
